M. SYED NASIM MANZUR, NEW PRESIDENT OF LFMEAB
Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director, Apex Footwear Ltd., has been elected as the new President of the Leathergoods And Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB). The outgoing President Mr. Md. Saiful Islam announced this in the 18th Annual General Meeting of LFMEAB for the year July 2020-June 2021 held on Saturday, 12th March 2022 at 12 PM at MCCI-BEF’s conference room at Police Plaza Concord, Dhaka.
The AGM appreciated the outgoing President’s contribution to the association and the industry and expressed sincere gratitude to him for accomplishing great success during his tenure. The house also welcomed President-elect Syed Nasim Manzur.

Vegan leather loses its green credentials as plastics require fossil fuels
Pleather, or plastic leather, was revived as “vegan leather” and hailed as an eco-friendly alternative to the real thing.
Now, however, it is being dropped by some brands over its green credentials as all require fossil fuels in their manufacturing.

Leathergoods And footwear manufacturing & exporters association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) HOLDS 18TH AGM
The 18th Annual General Meeting of Leathergoods And Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) for the year July 2020-June 2021 was held on Saturday, 12th March 2022 at 12 PM at MCCI-BEF’s conference room at Police Plaza Concord, Dhaka. President Mr. Md. Saiful Islam presided over the meeting while Sr. Vice-President, Mr. Abdul Momen Bhuiyan; Vice-President, Mr. Nasir Khan; Vice-President, Mr. Md. Nazmul Hassan Sohail, Director, Mr. M. Anisur Razzaque, President-elect Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur, and Chairpersons and Managing Directors of LFMEAB member factories were present among others.
President Saiful Islam presented the Annual Report for the fiscal year July 2020-June 2021where he highlighted the national outlook for the industry, major initiatives implemented, and a summary of the financial position. The Audit Report of LFMEAB of the fiscal year July 2020-June 2021 was approved unanimously at the AGM.
President Mr. Islam stated that during the fiscal year July 2020-June 2021, despite different challenges, particularly in the context of the Covid pandemic, the industry has shown its resilience. In spite of the unprecedented business setback as well as capacity underutilization, most LFMEAB member factories retained their full workforce, which was undoubtedly an incredible service to society.

First World Leather Day to took place on March 30
Leather Working Group (LWG) and Leather Naturally (LN) have joined forces to introduce World Leather Day, a new initiative to encourage organizations within the industry to positively promote leather.
U.S. is a growing market for Indian leather, says CLE
Sanjay Leekha, Chairman of the India Council for Leather Exports (CLE), has said that North America is a growing export market for Indian made leather and leather products.

Brazil to produce 820 million pairs of footwear in 2022
The Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados) is projecting that more than 820 million pairs of footwear will be produced in 2022.

LWG and LN mark World Leather Day at APLF Dubai
March 30 has marked international World Leather Day and was highlighted by the Leather Working Group (LWG) and Leather Naturally (LN) during a joint press conference at the APLF event in Dubai.
Christina Trautmann, Head of the LWG, and Egbert Dikkers, Board Chair at LN, announced the special day to celebrate the “durability, versatility of an upcycled material from another industry” at the APLF Dubai press conference at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Both organizations have shared images and logos celebrating the day, which will return next year.

Footwear (both Leather and synthetic) prioritized in 2021-24 export policy
The government makes the new Export Policy 2021-24 effective with the highest priority attached to 14 sectors to boost much-needed foreign-currency earnings.
With effect from March 23, 2022, the policy contains in its core navigating upcoming post-graduation challenges, fourth industrial revolution, research and development activities and coping with the covid-induced blow to exporting sectors.

Austan And Picard Successfully Achieve Sustainable Leather Foundation Audit Certification
The full SLF Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) audits were conducted at both the tannery and the product manufacturing facility, and the results show that both facilities are meeting standards across all areas.
Picard (Bangladesh) Ltd are the first product manufacturer to have an audit and listing on the SLF Transparency Dashboard and this is just the start of the widening out of value-chain connections through the platform. This will allow the good practice and certification to link through to the brand in a connected way. There is also the opportunity to use QR technology to reaffirm the certification.
